Jack Goldstein (1945–2003)
“The Jump, 1978, is a silent twenty-six-second loop projected on a fuchsia-colored wall illuminated by black lights. Using editing effects, Goldstein transformed a high diver, jumping into an amorphous deep purple space, into an incorporeal constellation of Technicolor stars. The strenuously exerted body of Goldstein’s early performative films has been completely recast by technology as an image: a burst of graceful, highly regulated, firework like light. The Jump was the last of Goldstein’s early films, and it is a fitting swan song to an era when the body was still considered a viable site of resistance.”
Thanks Kathy

Jonathan· 12/09/07Mike Meiré does all the best work — brand eins, Iserlohn and 032c.
“032c Magazine’s new winter issue ‘Cecil Balmond’ will be presented at DesignMIAMI (during Art BASEL) within 032c Art Director Mike Meiré’s FARM Project. The FARM Project is the sketch-like image of a farmhouse kitchen transposed into present time. The outer façade of a small house is
formed by a patchwork of panels in a wide range of materials; on the inside, household goods, live animals, plants, food and families jostle on a few square meters: it is the stage on which life is enacted.”

Ryan and I were talking about Reference Library the other night, found this Graphic Thought Facility post today — always so much good stuff on there. Had a chance to buy a really nice GTF catalogue in 2004 when I was in London — damn, now it’s out of print.

Jonathan· 11/21/07“The edition number was determined by the number of sheets the ink bled through from the possible 500. The numbering of each sheet corresponds to the position it was within the stack and also determined its value. The final sheet the ink reached, (furthest from the top) was numbered 1 / 73 and valued at £1, the one above numbered 2 / 73 and valued at £2 etc. The top sheet (the sheet the pens rested on) was numbered 73 / 73 and valued at £73.”
Thomas Demand, Yellowcake at 303 Gallery November 3 — December 22 2007.
Jonathan· 11/19/07“The title Yellowcake refers to the technical term denoting a concentrated form of uranium which, when enriched, may be used to make nuclear weapons. This word was recently on the public’s mind as the fulcrum that President George W. Bush used in his 2003 State of the Union Address when he stated: “The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of Uranium in Africa”. The evidence for this accusation was a paper trail purportedly stolen from the Embassy of the Republic of Niger, in Rome, and then given to both the British MI6 and American CIA by SISMI — Italian intelligence counterpart. The documents were an apparent contract of sale for hundreds of tons of ‘yellowcake’ by Niger to the Iraqi authorities. As the events making up this story unraveled, it became clear that the ‘evidence’ and information passed along by SISMI were obvious forgeries.”

Saw the Kara Walker (My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love) exhibition at the Whitney yesterday with Grant and Peter. Really recommend seeing it, makes us examine our own racism in a very different way. Here is a review.

Jonathan· 10/11/07Forms of Inquiry exhibition opens today at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London. Forms of Inquiry presents architecture as seen through the practice of graphic design. The exhibition highlights work by 20 contemporary international graphic designers who were asked to contribute ‘inquiries’ into architectural subjects. These self-propelled inquiries have been developed into a myriad of media and forms. The works exhibit a common desire to reframe the circumstances surrounding graphic design practise at the start of the 21st century.
A Reading Room situated in the Front Members’ Room will make visible the process of debate and exchange. This open library is guest-curated by eight publishers/designers who will contribute a selection of independent scholarly publications, books and zines, both new and historical, exemplifying graphically driven modes of inquiry from around the world.

Desiree and Ines sent me some beautiful photographs of their (Bless) show, taken yesterday. Looks like they’re dancing, but they’re actually playing football.
Jonathan· 10/01/07Vvork is a very popular art blog always looking for exciting ideas. In an interview vvork was asked: “why don’t you curate an exhibition?” to which they replied: “we would love to!”.
One thing led to the other and next week this exhibition opens to the public: Vvork curates a show titled: Bad Beuys Entertainment, Boling, Bruno, Chisa & Tkacova, collectif_fact, Matsoukis, Mirza, Prévieux, Rungjang, Zucconi. Opening at Galerie West in The Hague, the Netherlands, on the 6th of october, starting at 16:00 with an artist talk at 19:00.

Jonathan· 09/06/07Once again, Jacob Holdt’s still very important Book, American Pictures, recently republished by Steidl, under the title United States 1970–1975 with excellent reproductions, but (unfortunately) without the original accompanying texts.
