Roseanne Barr

Roseanne Barr was a sitcom star, a creator and a product, the agitator and the abused, a domestic goddess and a feminist pioneer. That was twenty years ago. But as far as she’s concerned, not much has changed.

“I happen to be the most expensive clothing designer in the world. I am sorry for that.”

NY Times Obit

A fixture of Los Angeles’ west side, Bijan’s billboards at Santa Monica and Sepulveda,
which he designed and art directed himself, will be sorely missed.

A 1995 video demonstrating Joe Connolly’s methods of graffiti abatement in Los Angeles. He has some interesting, but questionable, theories.

Joe Connolly did the (many) buffs/tags on Washington Blvd. rooftops in the 1990s:
“GRAFFITI NO LONGER ACCEPTED HERE. PLEASE FIND A DAY JOB. THANK YOU.”

Burden Basket (Golden), Nanette Sullano

Burden Baskets have been used by different groups of Native American people for various purposes, primarily for gathering seed, grain, fruit, wood, and personal belongings.

These baskets are made by Nanette Sullano using a coiling technique, inspired by traditional forms, with braided cotton rope, vegan suede lace, and leather. They are available in two shapes (womb or cone), three sizes for womb (small, medium, large), one size for cone (medium), and four vegan suede lace and leather colors (black, brown, golden, gray). All braided rope is 100 percent cotton and natural in color.

SHAKEDOWN is the story of a black lesbian strip club in Los Angeles. The film is anchored in the stories of three women: Ronnie Ron, the creator and emcee of Shakedown, a large butch/stud lesbian and former Jehovah’s Witness; Egypt, a single mother, beauty pageant fanatic, and dedicated self - (re)inventor; and Jazmyne, the complicated and sometimes conflicted “Queen” of Shakedown. We go through the process of their labor with them and record what they do, and how they feel about what they are doing.

We need your help to complete the edit of the film, master the sound and score, color correct the images, fly to LA to shoot our final interviews with the dancers and have an amazing premiere in cities across America.

Jonathan Maghen and Richard Lidinsky, PALS (Coming Soon)

Pals (full title: Pals for Life / Life for Pals) is a teleplay about the dialectics of friendships under the strain of artistic endeavor. Shot principally in January 2011 at the Actual Size gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, the approx. 34-minute video — told from the point of view of a traditional studio audience television program — revels in the angst and emotion of 4 friends/lovers who must install their respective art works in the presence of frenemies large and small. Each Pal is named after a specific human being, though the story implies that these pals are simple archetypes from a vast universe of narcissistic micro-movements.

PALS — “They came for the fame and stayed for the spectacles.”
Opening January 15, 2011
