Hassla Books is an independent publishing company with a focus on art and photography. They specialize in publishing small, low-run artist books that feature the work of both emerging and established artists, always working one-on-one with the artists to create a publication that evokes the very essence of the artist’s focus. This intimate process, coupled with Hassla’s simple aesthetic, allows for an interior view into the artist’s work.
Hassla Books are now available through Textfield Distribution or contact your local bookshop.

This reader in Whitechapel’s Documents of Contemporary Art series investigates the interchange between art and design. Since the the Pop and Minimalist eras–as the work of artists ranging from Andy Warhol to Dan Graham demonstrates — the traditional boundaries between art and architectural, graphic, and product design have dissolved in critically significant ways. Design and Art traces the rise of the “design-art” phenomenon through the writings of critics and practitioners active in both fields.

Thank you Tiffany!
After several weeks of preparation with Harsh and 9 straight days of intense/hard work by our students at CalArts (and our Teachers Assistant Diego), we are finished with Practicum! For our Practicum (Textfield Workshop), we had the students make their own book/mag/zine. In order to make a magazine in such a short period, Harsh and I selected 2 formats for them to work with, developed a Content Library and a limited Type Library. Students paired themselves into groups of 2 — each group was responsible for selecting a topic and compiling, editing and laying out their own 16-page Signature (112 pages total). We couldn’t have been more excited with the results.
Special thanks goes to our Teachers Assistant Diego Padilla, who went above and beyond to make sure the students kept on top of their work and contributed so much to the critiques, really outstanding — Also Stacey Hauge Printing in Valencia, who did an amazing job of folding, trimming and binding our Project. Dennis (owner), Bryan and their staff, spent over 3 hours working closely with us and (unexpectedly) did our job Pro Bono — we cannot thank you enough for your time, experience and generosity.
Dennis has 8 adopted German Shepherds — please visit the German Shepherd Rescue website for more information.

Tagbanger· 11/14/07Forms of Inquiry exhibition opens today at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London. Forms of Inquiry presents architecture as seen through the practice of graphic design. The exhibition highlights work by 20 contemporary international graphic designers who were asked to contribute ‘inquiries’ into architectural subjects. These self-propelled inquiries have been developed into a myriad of media and forms. The works exhibit a common desire to reframe the circumstances surrounding graphic design practise at the start of the 21st century.
A Reading Room situated in the Front Members’ Room will make visible the process of debate and exchange. This open library is guest-curated by eight publishers/designers who will contribute a selection of independent scholarly publications, books and zines, both new and historical, exemplifying graphically driven modes of inquiry from around the world.

Great article in the New York Times on the 2nd annual NY Art Book Fair. Several of our Publishers (Nieves, Passenger Books and Peres Projects) participated and said it was great. We’ll be participating next year!
Jonathan· 10/05/07Once again, Jacob Holdt’s still very important Book, American Pictures, recently republished by Steidl, under the title United States 1970–1975 with excellent reproductions, but (unfortunately) without the original accompanying texts.
